Our Mission

To support the promotion and development of older adult recreation activities, events, programs, equipment and/or facilities in Weld Senior/Older Adult Centers.  The Foundation’s Board of Directors accomplishes this mission by having annual goals, raising funds for eligible projects and activities, offering grants annually to support programs, and hosting an annual event, the Hall of Fame, to honor the hard-working volunteers of Weld County.

Our History

The Greeley/Weld Senior Foundation (GWSF) was founded in 1991 by Dr. Max Shirley, a retired professor from the University of Northern Colorado, with a vision to honor the invaluable contributions of older adults in our community. Driven by his deep respect for the senior population and their impact through volunteerism, Dr. Shirley established the foundation to formally recognize individuals aged 60 and older who have generously given their time, energy, and talents to make a difference in Greeley and the greater Weld County area.

On September 25, 1991, the GWSF was officially established as a nonprofit corporation, with the stated mission of "honoring senior citizens." From the very beginning, the foundation focused on celebrating the lives and legacies of local senior volunteers, highlighting their achievements through public recognition and annual awards. Over the years, GWSF has honored dozens of outstanding older adults and has awarded thousands of dollars in grants to Weld County senior/older adult centers that serve the needs of seniors.

In January 1998, the GWSF became affiliated with the Community Foundation Serving Greeley and Weld County, expanding its reach and strengthening its capacity to support senior-focused programs throughout the region. The initial funding for the foundation was generously provided by the Greeley Senior Center’s Senior Club. In the years since, additional financial support has helped sustain and grow the foundation’s work. Notably, an endowment from Dr. Albert Winchester, also a University of Northern Colorado professor and a dedicated member of the GWSF Board of Directors furthered the foundation’s ability to fund grants and awards.

Today, the Greeley/Weld Senior Foundation continues to honor the spirit of volunteerism among older adults and remains committed to recognizing and supporting those who make our community stronger through service. Their stories and efforts inspire all generations to give back, lead by example, and value the wisdom and experience of our senior citizens.
